Authorities reported that a bear randomly attacked a guy from Arizona on his property on Friday morning and mauled him to death. According to a statement from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, Tucson resident Steven Jackson, 66, was discovered dead next to the black bear in Groom Creek. Prior to 8 a.m. local time, Jackson was outdoors enjoying coffee on his property where he was building a house when the animal started assaulting him.

According to the sheriff's office, "it appears that a male black bear ambushed Mr. Jackson, caught him off guard, and carried him about 75 feet down an embankment. When they heard Jackson scream, the neighbours yelled and honked their car horns to scare the bear away, but the animal was unmoved. The neighbour then pulled out his gun, shot the bear, and killed it.

According to a news statement from the sheriff's office, "unfortunately, at that time Mr. Jackson succumbed to his horrific injuries." Authorities were informed by the Arizona Department of Fish and Game that the incidence was extremely unique because a comparable incident took before in the middle of the 1980s. The absence of anything that would have naturally drawn the bear to the area has officials in a state of shock.

"At first glance, there did not appear to be anything at the site that would have precipitated a bear attack, such as food, a place to cook, or access to water," the sheriff's office stated. The Arizona Department of Fish and Game has officials who believe the bear's aggressive behaviour was a "predatory response," but they are unsure of what precipitated it.

Sheriff David Rhodes expressed his condolences to Mr. Jackson's family in a statement. I am incredibly disturbed by this circumstance, and all I can say is that you are in our thoughts and prayers. The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office is looking into the situation right now. Authorities advise locals to refrain from shooting bears unless they are in immediate danger.
