The girl was found to have at least a dozen broken bones, was covered in burns, scratches, and bruises, and had a laceration in her shin that was so deep that bone could be seen through the incision by medical professionals performing a physical examination at a hospital in the Phoenix region. Medical personnel also saw that the girl's injuries had not received enough medical attention and that several of them were infected. Additionally, it was found that the child had chronic malnutrition.
The magnitude of the traumas she endured at home in suburban Glendale would ultimately be revealed to child welfare officials and police enforcement. The child first fabricated a lie, attributing some of the assault she experienced to an uncle. The uncle said police he had witnessed Wimbish and Sergent assaulting the girl in November and December 2021 but denied any wrongdoing.
The girl had been instructed by her mother and stepfather to place the blame elsewhere, according to the results of a second forensic interview. The girl would inform law authorities that her stepfather beat her with a stunning variety of weapons on numerous occasions, which is a possible reason for her various fractured bones. Both the mother and stepfather reportedly denied any involvement in the abuse during police interviews.
