On Long Island, a fearless 15-year-old surfer had his foot bit off by a shark, but he insisted that the attack wouldn't stop him from getting back on his board. Peter Banculli of North Babylon told Long Island's News 12 that he was eager to return and begin shredding once more.

Around 5:30 p.m., Banculli and a friend were surfing near Fire Island. He claimed that on Monday, the man-eater bit his left heel and toes, forcing him to row for his life to the shore. He told the station, "My first response when the shark grabbed my foot was to immediately get out of the water...and get help."

According to Banculli, Joe, a friend of Banculli's, and a kind stranger assisted him up until Kismet Beach lifeguards arrived and brought him to the emergency room of a hospital. His mother Kelly told the station, "At first I didn't believe it, and then my reaction was pure panic." I had to visit him immediately. She continued, "I'm so proud of him and he's very brave."


Banculli said he intends to resume surfing as soon as he recovers while he takes a closer look at what might be hiding beneath the surface. Banculli has been using a knee scooter to get around with his wounded foot. He is grateful that his injury did not twist further.

"Thank you to the good Samaritans on the beach who helped me, thank you to all the people in the hospital and the ER for me, yes, the lifeguards, my mom and my dad, thank you," she said. According to Newsday, a total of 15 Saltaire ambulance personnel assisted in Banculli's care and hospital transportation.
