Ishmael Jenkins Burch Incident Detail

According to the San Jose Mercury News, as Angel stepped out of her car to chase the robber, she was pushed over in a struggle, trapped in the suspects' car door, and dragged more than 50 feet before collapsing onto the street. Friends of Angel stated that three days after losing all brain activity and being taken off life support, Angel passed away in a hospital.

After being recognised as the driver, Burch allegedly committed a second heist nearby the same day. Data from cell phones and CCTV video were helpful. Angel, 48, developed Angel Cakes and formerly operated a counterculture publication. In Oakland's historic Gingerbread House, which was a fixture of the city from the 1970s to 2007, he opened a bakery there in 2016.

In order to respect his dedication to restorative and transformative justice, his family stated that they did not want the individual or people responsible for his death to go to prison. She held the opinion that incarceration was neither an effective nor a just response to social injustice and violence. Jen Angel's estate, a group of close friends, stated on their website that they are committed to exploring all possible options in addition to filing a typical criminal charge.

"Jen's family and close friends ask that the media honour this request and carry out her life story with celebration and clarity about the world she intended to build," according to the statement. "Jen's family and friends request any tales mentioning her life refrain from using her legacy of kindness and her community to fuel narratives of fear, hate, and retaliation. We oppose using tax dollars to fund jail, spying, or any other form of state brutality that feeds the cycle of violence that led to this tragedy.

The statement went on to say that "it is absolutely necessary to take steps to ensure that those who committed this heinous violence against Jen do not harm other people and that these situations are not replicated in our society." Jen, however, was of the opinion that none of these things are effectively ensured by the current legal system, and that the current system of prison punishment does not make society any safer.
