Reports state that Olympic swimmer Helen Smart, who represented Great Britain at the 2000 Sydney Games, passed away. The Greater Manchester school where Smart served as head teacher acknowledged her demise. Worsley Mesnes Community Primary School released a statement saying, "It is with great sadness and regret that I must announce the sudden passing of our beloved Headteacher, Mrs. Helen Smart.

Her husband Craig Smart commented on a Facebook post from the school that she had retired from swimming and had now concentrated on her desire to work in education. Craig remarked that Helen "loved the school, staff, children, and parents so much" and was "so proud" to have held the position of headteacher.

"I recall her saying only last week that she wanted the school to be excellent and that she had the right team to make this happen! I wish you everyone continued success as you learn. Helen's previous swimming teammates Rachael Ashcroft said, "Helen's fierce tenacity and inherent competitive spirit always motivated me. We frequently engaged in competition with one another, yet it always felt as though we were supporting one another as we went.

Champion backstroker Katy Sexton told the group, "Helen was such a vibrant character, always happy and a great friend and roommate." She had an incredible work ethic that she applied to her life outside of sports and was such a dedicated player.
