Diana Owen, chief executive of the L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, which employed Mr. Coates, said she was "deeply shocked and saddened" to hear of his passing. Ian was a well-liked and esteemed employee at Huntingdon Academy. During this incredibly sad time, my thoughts are with his family and friends, she said. After the two students were discovered dead in the street in Ilkeston Road just after 4 a.m., and Mr. Coates was discovered about two miles distant in Magdala Road, police declared a major incident.

The family of Mr. Webber described the university students as "complete devastation," calling them "talented" young sports stars. According to Nottinghamshire Police, a 31-year-old male is being questioned on murder suspicion. The culprit is suspected of stealing Mr. Coates' van and ramming it into Milton Street pedestrians. Three persons were hurt in the van attack, one of whom is in critical condition and two of whom had less serious wounds.

Police used a stun gun to arrest the suspect after stopping the car. The'senseless murder' has left people devastated David and Emma Webber, as well as Mr. Webber's younger brother Charlie, issued a statement in which they said: "Complete devastation is not enough to describe our pain and loss at the senseless murder of our son." Ms. Meynell said that officers had searched a number of residences in the city, and cordons had been erected along different stretches of Ilkeston Road. Police were manning a terraced house across the street from where employees at a nearby hair salon claimed it had been searched the previous year. When questioned whether the incident may have been tied to terrorism, Home Secretary Suella Braverman responded, "we're in a very early stage of the investigation."
