Gina Mestre Incident detail

It is said that by 2019, the officer was hanging out with the "Shooting Boys" gang and Andrew "Caballo" Done.  The indictment claims that the gang participated in the distribution of drugs like fentanyl, crack, and other illegal substances as well as armed robberies and attacks on rival gangs. The gang has been terrorizing the University Heights neighborhood at least since 2017.

According to the prosecution, Mestre allegedly started informing the gang of an ongoing federal grand jury inquiry into their operations around June 2020. She purportedly even revealed the identity of a witness engaged in the case, which was ultimately revealed to be false. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have charged Gina Mestre with giving the "Shooting Boys" group secret information.

She allegedly engaged in this alleged behavior after having a "intimate relationship" with the gang's boss. Her conduct were described by the prosecutors as "shameless." According to reports, the disgraced officer even informed her fictitious partner Done about a police search that was being conducted for him. This development came after the four-count indictment's description of the September 2020 shooting of a member of a rival gang.

On Cromwell Avenue in the Bronx on November 5, 2020, Done is accused of shooting and critically injuring a member of a rival gang. As a result, police gathered security footage of the incident and started looking for the suspect. Interestingly, according to the indictment, Mestre was apparently one of the officers working on the probe.

Federal prosecutors revealed a 15-count indictment against 10 members of the "Shooting Boys" gang last year. Done, the suspect in the 2020 homicide, was one among them. The guilty plea was made by Done on November 17, 2022. Mestre, who had apparently been associated with the gang by then, had already left the NYPD in May 2022.

US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement that Gina Mestre "shamelessly exploited her position of public trust to assist gang members in her own NYPD precinct who were terrorizing the Bronx by committing robberies, murders, drug trafficking, and other acts of violence." Williams continued, "The indictment, which was unsealed today, claims that the defendant abused her authority as an NYPD police officer by, among other things, obstructing a federal grand jury investigation into the gang and aiding the gang's leader in eluding arrest for a cold-blooded murder committed in broad daylight.
