According to accounts, a young adolescent was killed when he was hit by a monorail while spray painting the side of a building in Seattle. Xavier Gayton, 14, was visiting Washington state from Arizona when he went onto the roof of a downtown building near the monorail rails.

According to Seattle police and news accounts, he was beaten and died on July 30. "The news was so deeply painful and shocking that it's not even something I can really describe," Gaytan's mother, Allison Gardner, told Fox 10 Phoenix. "He had a strong desire to do something." Unfortunately, he did not think it through."

Gaytan was born in Washington but moved to Arizona with his mother nine years ago. He was in town for the summer, visiting relatives and friends. Gardner regarded him as a lively, inventive, and gifted artist. As of Saturday, his GoFundMe page had garnered nearly $9,000 in donations.

"Despite being warned numerous times about the dangers and illegality of doing graffiti on the street, I don't think he fully understood the reality or the danger of it," Gardner said. According to investigators, the Seattle Fire Department attempted life-saving efforts but were unable to save Gaytan. Officers received video footage of the teen doing the graffiti.
