A 31-year-old Ohio woman has been charged with killing her 16-month-old daughter after allegedly confessing to leaving the child unattended at home for more than a week while she took a vacation. According to court records analysed by Law&Crime, Kristel A. Candelario was detained on Saturday and charged with one count of murder in connection with the unfortunate death of child Jailyn Candelario.

The Cleveland Police Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) employees responded to a call of a dead baby, later identified as Jailyn, at a residence in the 3100 block of West 97th Street around 8 a.m. on June 16. The caller identified herself as the boy's mother and claimed that when she returned home, the young child was unresponsive.

EMS workers discovered the girl at the address and declared her dead when they arrived. No "signs of trauma" were discovered, according to a news statement from the police. According to the police report, "a preliminary investigation revealed that Jailyn was extremely dehydrated." Police discovered "dirty blankets" and an underliner that was "saturated with urine and faeces" in Jailyn's Pack-N-Play container.

According to the authorities, Candelario admitted to leaving her youngest boy unattended when she took a 10-day trip. According to the incident report, "Candelario's own admission" indicated that from June 8 to 16, "while on vacation in Puerto Rico and Detroit, Michigan," she left Jailyn "at home, completely alone and unattended."

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office received the boy's remains for an autopsy and additional investigation. It was found by the medical examiner that "the child had been left alone and unattended for approximately 10 days and subsequently died," according to the authorities.

Candelario's neighbours allegedly told the Cleveland NBC station WKYC that she was regarded as an absent mother. In August 2022, nearby residents informed the station that Candelario dropped Jailyn off at her flat and asked if they could watch her for the weekend. They said that Candelario then vanished for a few weeks while either not returning calls or providing justifications for why she couldn't give birth to her child."
