When Sagala passed away at Auckland City Hospital five days after consuming the drug-laced beer, word of the lethal brew first spread in March.

Glenn Baldwin is a criminal investigator with Auckland City.

According to Baldwin, the inquiry "uncovered a significant drug import, where drugs were allegedly imported in liquid form concealed in beer cans," and that the beer's market worth was in the hundreds of millions of dollars. After discovering four pallets packed with the contaminated beverage, police also made two arrests in the case.
