Reena Virk was attacked by eight teens, seven girls and one boy, at a party in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, in 1997. Her tragic story will be told in Hulu's Under The Bridge.

She also had to deal with her parents' rigid religious obligations because they had left Hinduism to join the Jehovah's Witnesses. After escaping the family home and making a desperate attempt to flee from her parents, the unhappy girl was given into the care of her grandparents.

But after refusing to go along with that plan, she was quickly placed in a group foster home.The then 14-year-old was thrilled to receive an invitation from her peers to hang out as she fought turmoil and still dreamed of blending in with those around her. The conference, which took place on November 14, 1997, was planned to be close to the Craigflower Bridge, which crosses the gorge's inner channel. But things weren't always as they seemed.

After rolling Reena's body into the canal, the two are accused of holding her under until she drowned; Ellard denies this.

At the time, her parents reported her missing, but considering Reena's problematic history of running away, officials took little action. It took the police eight days to discover her body. Reena's head injuries likely would have killed the teen if she hadn't drowned, according to the postmortem results.

The Shoreline Six apparently made an agreement not to "snitch" on one another as rumors about the school persisted. Later, when other students overheard the murderers boasting about the killing, the police learned the truth. Due to the seriousness of the incident, Glowatski and Ellard were tried in adult court despite being charged with murder and aggravated assault.

The other six females engaged in the initial assault were tried in juvenile court in February 1998 while having their identities kept private. The other three girls were found guilty of the same offense at trial after the other three girls entered guilty pleas to assault with bodily harm. Glowatski was given a life sentence after being found guilty of second-degree murder.

Before being released in June 2010, he admitted guilt to his crime, entered a restorative justice program, and made amends with the Virk family. In March 2000, Ellard was found guilty of second-degree murder; however, because she was not given a fair trial, the conviction was reversed on appeal. She was charged with attacking a 58-year-old lady in a Vancouver park after being freed pending a new trial. In June 2004, Ellard was returned to prison while awaiting her second trial, in which she claimed that Reena was murdered by others.

A mistrial was declared as a result of the jury's impasse. In April 2005, a third trial took place, and Ellard was once more convicted guilty of second-degree murder and given a seven-year sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The conviction and sentence were reinstated by the Supreme Court of Canada after being reversed on appeal this time.

"By 2020, when she was in her thirties, Ellard had a second child with the same partner and was receiving probation as part of a program to reintegrate her into the community."

Glowatski, who gave false testimony during two of Ellard's trials, has recently received forgiveness from Reena's family. The Globe and Mail quoted her mother Suman as saying: "I think the primary reason we have forgiven Warren is so we can set this whole affair aside and for our own healing and sense of wholeness. Reena's family then launched a campaign to increase public awareness of bullying and teen violence.

In 2009, they were honored with the Anthony J. Hulme Award of Distinction for their efforts. Sadly, Suman Virk, 58, passed away in June 2018 from a choking incident that occurred while she was dining in a restaurant.
