Timothy Mertins and Julie Mertins  a married couple who were apparently selfless and loving, were killed on Saturday, September 30, when their speeding boat went off of an Illinois river and into a house, resulting in a horrifying crash that split the boat in half. Alarming security footage has also been found, which depicts the couple's motorboat bouncing over a rough wake as it approaches the shore in McHenry, a city about 60 miles northwest of Chicago.

The ship struck the land before speeding 73 feet down the grass before slamming into a home. The boat's hull was split in half, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, as reported by the New York Post. Others rushed to save the pair as they were trapped beneath the wreckage, but Julie was pronounced dead on the scene from blunt force trauma. After being rescued and taken to a local hospital, her husband Timothy passed away on the operation table.

Their obituary stated, "They did everything together from yard work to grocery shopping, and they loved getting out on the lake whenever they got the chance. If Tim was the Captain, Julie was First Mate. On October 20, they would have commemorated 33 years of marriage.The deadly collision's origin remains a mystery, and toxicology

Witnesses allegedly saw their motorboat flying up and down the Fox River at a "very fast" velocity, according to the IDNR. The boat was "weaving and cutting back and forth across the water" when it plowed headlong into the house and the shoreline. According to a witness, Julie and Timothy allegedly lost control of the boat while making what appeared to be a tight circle at a high speed.

Unidentified woman informed Lake McHenry Scanner that the boat made a "huge circle around, back toward the rocks" and made a right turn while still travelling "really fast." The boat did not slow down as it then took off and fell into the air.

In a moving Facebook post, Timothy's sister, Karen Mertins, wrote: "It is with a heavy heart that I have to bid goodbye to my brother and sister-in-law. They will live on in our hearts forever. We wish them eternal peace.
