Additionally, his sister told The Sun that she would "love" to stand up and defend her brother's name, but that she has been instructed by legal counsel not to do so at this time.Richard Allen's attorneys stated in a lengthy 136-page document that two groups of "Odinism" cultists, one from Delphi and one from the Rushville region in southeast Indiana, were probed for their possible involvement in the killings. They claimed that Abby and Libby were killed by members of the cult.
Additionally, they asserted that Allen was innocent and that officials "recklessly ignored" the connection between the crime and the members of the Odinist movement. The attorneys also claimed that Abby and Brad Holder's son were dating at the time of her death and that he published a number of 'Easter eggs' on Facebook following the Delphi killings. They claimed that Holder shared the images, which had pictures of runes and other details that resembled the crime site, as a way of taunting law enforcement.
On the other hand, Messer was described as a "recruiter" for the "Vinlander" gang by Allen's legal team, who also stated that Messer and Holder had a very tight relationship. According to the lawyers, the term "Vinlander" is synonymous with people who practise "Odinism." They claimed that Messer was allegedly in the Delphi neighbourhood on or just after Valentine's Day 2017, the day the girls were discovered dead, with his "Vinlander buddies."
"Johnny’s ex-girlfriend, Taylor Hornaday, told police that Johnny Messer and Patrick Westfall were like brothers," stated the affidavit. It went on to say, "She also told police that she had allowed Johnny to borrow her car on or around Valentine’s Day 2017 and that Johnny drove her car 'up there' [to Delphi] to hang with his Vinlander friends." The memorandum further claimed that when Messer gave Hornaday the car back, she allegedly told police there was dried blood on the side of the vehicle and that he allegedly failed to explain the circumstances surrounding it.
"Johnny Messer’s ex-girlfriend further stated that it took her several car washes to finally remove the blood," the additional document continued. "Meanwhile, Messer has claimed that he had never, not once in his life, been to Delphi, home of his 'brother' Patrick Westfall, and near the home of his other Odinite brother, Brad Holder." His ex-girlfriend listed him and Holder as two of the most "violent" people she knew, according to the filing. According to reports, she stated that she believed they were "fully capable of being involved in the murders."
"Johnny Messer’s ex-girlfriend further stated that a motive for their involvement in the murder of Abby and Libby might be the concept of 'blood in and blood out,' which means 'social acceptance into their secret circles'," according to the report. All of this information was given to Liggett and the Unified Command team, but Unified Command gave no instructions on how to use it to forward the investigation into the murders.
The petition said, "In addition, Unified Command discovered that Johnny Messer's ex-girlfriend had been listening to and recording Johnny Messer's phone calls. Furthermore, it stated that "police secured the phone and listened to three calls involving Johnny Messer. Messer "offered money to other people to find someone so they can be injured or killed" in two of those phone calls. "The third call involves Messer 'bragging about holding a subject hostage and shooting them at his house'," said the paper.
Attorneys for Allen continued by saying that despite the supposed evidence, investigators had concluded that there was "nothing to see here" in relation to Messer. They claimed that neither a search warrant nor a "attempt to use an age-old investigative tool known as a 'interrogation' to pursue the truth about Johnny Messer, Brad Holder, or Patrick Westfall's involvement in these crimes" were used by authorities to look into Messer's residence.
The murders of Liberty German and Abigail Williams, known as the "Delphi murders," attracted a lot of media interest, particularly after video and audio recordings were found on German's phone and purportedly showed the murderer. They purportedly vanished from the region on February 13, 2017, and on February 14, 2017, their remains were reportedly found close to the Monon High Bridge Trail in Delphi, Indiana.
In October 2022, Richard Allen was apprehended and lodged in the Carroll County Jail on two counts of murder. Prosecutors earlier claimed, as reported by the Daily Mail, that he confessed to killing the teenagers five times while on the phone with his wife. Allen had earlier pled not guilty to both murder charges, and attorney Andrew Baldwin had stated that Allen was the "wrong guy." Allen's suspected accomplices have not yet been identified by the authorities, however Carroll County Prosecutor Nicholas McLeland has acknowledged that he believes "Allen is not the only actor involved in this."
