Tyler had been an officer in Madison, another Jackson suburb, for seven years. He oversaw the training of the recently hired officers, according to the Madison department, and was a member of its special response team. Tyler was the former police chief of the nearby city of Ridgeland.

Republican governor Tate Reeves issued a statement saying, "Today, Mississippi mourns Officer Tyler, his loved ones, and the rest of the law enforcement community." "Their brave sacrifice of him probably saved the lives or injuries of others." Gabriel Matthew Wilson, 22, of the city of Pearl, was named as the shooter by Dearman at a press conference.

According to Dearman, Brandon Police received a call at 1:20 AM reporting a man in a tactical vest attempting to break into a home where two ladies were armed with two handguns and a rifle. He added that according to the investigators, Wilson's girlfriend was one of the ladies.

The chief claimed that while Wilson held the other woman hostage until police delivered him the water he asked, one woman immediately made off with her. The hostage escaped uninjured as the officers exited the residence after pouring water inside. "From our conversations with him, he was there and looking for a fight," Dearman said. According to the chief, Wilson's mother assisted police in speaking to her son at the site.

Dearman claimed that a few hours after the altercation, Wilson started firing at two officers from inside the house while they were outside. One of the policemen, who works for the Brandon Police Department, was injured by the gunfire. While wearing a bulletproof vest, the officer was shot in the side, according to Dearman, who would not give his name.
A few hours later, Dearman claimed, police flew a drone to the house, and the footage from it showed Wilson laying on a mattress. To attempt to end the impasse, a team of police officers arrived. Dearman speculated that the drone may have collided with a ceiling fan. After he awoke, he picked up the rifle once more, and that is when he fatally shot the cop from Madison. He said, "Some of the team members ultimately had to subdue the subject after Wilson fired several shots."

As it happens with the majority of shootings involving or committed by law enforcement personnel in the state, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the matter. According to Bailey Martin, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, the MBI will subsequently submit its findings to the state attorney general's office.
