Two years after his decaying body was discovered under a staircase, the lady who told a Houston police detective that her landlord "probably faked" his own death and was "living in Africa" is now charged with murder, according to court documents.According to court records, Pamela Ann Merritt, 43, was detained on Friday in connection with the passing of Colin Kerdachi, her landlord, who was 78 years old. Detectives suspect Merritt killed Kerdachi with a knife on or around February 15, 2021, and then, with the aid of a roommate, hid his body behind an external staircase, according to an arrest affidavit.

The murder took place in the midst of Houston's record-breaking freeze, which resulted in thousands of power outages and an estimated $24 billion in damage. Despite Houston police being summoned to the home multiple times, including when Kerdachi's friends called to report him missing, his body wasn't discovered until December 6, 2021. On February 20, 2021, some of Kerdachi's close friends reported him missing after they heard nothing from him the day after the storm. This is when police were initially sent to the house.

Then, three days later, police went back to the house to investigate a burglary that was being carried out by the individual who was renting from Kerdachi, who was residing on the top level of the triplex and lived on the ground floor. After a lengthy vacation, the man claimed to have found Merritt inside his house when he got home, and she had refused to leave.According to the affidavit, police transported Merritt to a hospital for a psychiatric assessment.

On October 2, 2021, when a different tenant said she was cleaning the second and third floors of the flat and discovered sizable pools of blood in a third floor bathroom, officers were once more called to the house for a suspicious occurrence. Additionally, the renter reported to the police discovering a knife in the mailbox and a bloody trash can in a third-floor crawl area.

A detective in 2023 made contact with the person who reported the February 2021 burglary while examining all of the police visits to the house before the body was discovered. According to the affidavit, the guy claimed that Merritt told her that she killed Kerdachi when he inquired about the whereabouts of the landlord. Detectives also spoke with a man who claimed to have spent time with Merritt's friend Kerdachi days prior to the discovery of her body.

Merritt was given a murder arrest warrant on May 30 and was hauled into custody on Friday. According to the authorities, Michael Brown is charged with tampering with evidence since he reportedly assisted in disposing of Kerdachi's body.
