Renowned cave diver Brett B. Hemphill passed away while on an excursion in one of the US's deepest underwater caves. The 56-year-old record-breaking cave diver was in Texas' Phantom Springs Cave on October 4 when he went missing. His body was found on Sunday, October 8, according to People.Hemphill left following an underwater exploration with his colleague Andy Pitkin, according to a statement from the nonprofit organization Karts Underwater Research (KUR), which he created.

According to the non-profit organization, Pitkin, who serves as the director of KUR, went diving alongside the record-breaking diver.Prior to the two divers separating, Hemphill was last seen on camera attaching a guideline at about 570 feet into the cave. He never surfaced, though, and his team had to immediately respond in order to retrieve him "from a depth of over 450 feet and over a mile into the underwater cave," as reported by KUR.

According to the organization, finding Hemphill would require "a number of recovery divers" to come to the caves in order to find him, and "cave diver recoveries are logistically difficult." On Sunday, the divers discovered Hemphill's body, four days after he first submerged.Pitkin's message was published on the nonprofit organization's social media accounts on Sunday, October 8. "We finished recovering Brett from the cave this evening," it read.

"We are grateful to everyone who helped in any way. We will release a statement regarding the incident that will address everyone's concerns once we have collected and examined all the available material, according to Pitkin.

"Until then, please allow us some time to come to terms with his loss, as up until now we have been focused on the recovery," he said.According to Hemphill's biography on the KUR website, his love of exploration and cave diving started when he was a small child and during a youth dry cave excursion when he found an unexplored portion of a cave.

He continued to break more underwater diving records and led numerous expedition groups after that.In Florida's Weeki Wachee Springs in 2008, he broke the country's record for the deepest underwater cave. In 2014, he was renowned for establishing the nation's deepest connection between the Weeki Wachee and Twin Dees caverns.
