Prosecutors claim that an environmental compliance specialist attempted to hire a hitman to kill the wife of a hiker she met on Match.com. According to the Daily Beast, 47-year-old Melody Sasser is charged with threatening David Wallace and his wife Jennifer by reportedly stalking their adversary and using a fitness app to transmit real-time updates and information to a phoney murder website that eventually alerted the authorities.

"This must seem accidental or random. Sasser allegedly said under the handle "Cattree" on the now-defunct "Online Killers Market" website, "Or plant drugs, I don't want a long investigation." According to court documents submitted in a Knoxville, Tennessee, federal court, Sasser, who worked for truck stop company Pilot Flying J, provided the website with about $9,750 worth of bitcoin on January 11 along with details about Jennifer and the requirements the hit man must meet to maintain the cold trail.

Although it's unclear what exactly their relationship was, David Wallace and Sasser looked to have been paired on the online dating service sometime around 2020. The two became close when hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, southeast of Knoxville.

Wallace, a US Department of Energy employee, told investigators that year Sasser even assisted him in hiking the Appalachian Trail. However, their union fell apart in 2022 when Wallace and Jennifer, who was then his fiancée, moved to Prattville, Alabama. The couple claims that Sasser found them and confronted them, at which point David informed Sasser that he was going to wed Jennifer.

Sasser allegedly said, "I hope you fall off a cliff to your death," according to court records. Prosecutors claim that Sasser started posting on the Online Killers Market website in December and frequently expressed anger because no hit man had promptly accepted the job. Sasser is said to have grown so irate that she finally complained to the site's administrator.

User Cattree commented on March 22 that "you said two weeks ago that the work has been done on this and will be completed in a week." "The project is still in progress. Does it need to be given to another person? Will it be completed? What's the hold-up, and when will it be finished?

When Catree was informed that the hit guy had declined the assignment because "it was too risky," she started sharing Jennifer's data from the Strava fitness app, including her routine and her hiking routes. After learning of Jennifer's beating on April 27, the Department of Homeland Security sent out detectives to help the couple stay safe and track down the individual who was trying to kill her.

According to court filings, authorities tracked the money that left Catree's account and served a subpoena on Coinhub, which runs Bitcoin ATMs and was connected to Sasser. On November 9 and 14, 2022, police located Sasser's 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe close to Jennifer's Birmingham office.
