Martin Butterwick

Apprenticed to James Russell at The Hall, Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, Martin Butterwick's riding weight was 8 stone.

He rode a couple of good winners as an apprentice - Eleanor Mary & 20/1 outsider Black Moon for Noel Murless, both in August 1945, but, with rides becoming increasingly difficult to find, it was all over a year later and he retired from the saddle.

In his short career, Papana was probably the best horse he rode.
