Derek Lawrence Brown was born on June 7, 1961.
As an apprentice, he served five years with Mick Masson, one year with Stan Mellor and two years with David Elsworth.
His first winner came on 11/10 favourite Azd, trained by Mick Masson, in the Glynde Apprentice Handicap at Brighton on May 28, 1981.
Derek gained his biggest success on Floyd in the Queen’s Prize at Kempton on April 6, 1985.
His apprenticeship ended in June that year and he turned professional. His first winner in that status coming on Floyd in the White House Handicap at Newbury on July 19.
That 1985 season was also his best, riding five winners.
