Richard Boyce

Richard Boyce, the oldest trainer at Newmarket, died there on Sunday, 20th December 1891 aged 85. He had been a jockey for many years before he began training horses for the Earl of Sandwich and Lord Suffield.

In the 1830's he accepted an invitation to go to France and take charge of the horses in the stables of Lord Henry Seymour, who had been instrumental in founding the French Derby. Richard Boyce trained Poetess to win that race in 1841.

When Seymour died, Richard returned to Newmarket where he continued to train until advancing age compelled him to stop.

He was the son of Richard Dixon Boyce: his three brothers, Henry, Frank & William, all became jockeys.
