Frederick Beardsall Black, a young friend of the immortal Fred Archer, won the 1898 NorthumberlandPlate on Mr Vyner's King Crow, the 4-1 second favourite.
Born in 1870, he was originally apprenticed to Matt Dawson before later riding for Capt. de Grey Vyner at Middleham, Yorkshire.
It was here that he became a trainer for a short time, subsequently leaving the racing scene to enter into business with his brother.
He died, aged 74, after a long illness, in early July 1945, at 263, Broomhill Road, Highbury Vale,Nottingham, where he had been living for twenty years.
