Percy Bewicke

1861 - 1950

Born in Chelsea on December 22, 1861, Captain Percival Wentworth Bewicke served with the 15th Hussars.

He was a leading amateur rider in the late 19th century and had his first ride in public in 1883 and his first winner the following year at Plumpton.

He was the Champion Amateur in 1891, 1892 & 1894.

His biggest win came in the 1892 Grand Military Gold Cup on Ormerod.

He also won the Lancashire Chase twice on Roman Oak (1892) and Lady Helen (1896). In 1895 he won the Jubilee Hurdle on Stop.

He took out a licence to train in 1909.

Retiring in 1928 he said: 'I shall not mind if I never see a racecourse again.'

Percy died in Newcastle on May 20, 1950, aged 88.
