George Bellhouse

1885 - 1946

The son of engineer Bellhouse of the city fire brigade, George Francis Bellhouse was born at the fire station in the Upper Priory, Birmingham, in July 1885 and was apprenticed to William Flatman at Chantilly up to Christmas, 1905.

He finished second in the French jockeys' championship of 1904 with 94 winners.

He won the 1,000 Guineas on Bettina and the 1915 St Leger on Tracery.

He also won the 1906 Lincoln on Ob and the 1919 French Derby on Tchad.

He was obliged to give up riding a year later after a fall had left him partially paralyzed.

Joe Childs replaced him.

George died on July 22, 1946, at Moulins, near Vichy, at the age of 61. He left £9,017.
