Tommy Beasley

1846 - 1905

Tommy Beasley was one of the greatest amateur riders of all time. He rode in twelve Grand Nationals, winning on three occasions: 1880 (Empress), 1881 (Woodbrook) and 1889 (Frigate).

Tommy was, originally, a Flat race jockey and, before going jumping, had twice won the Irish Derby. He also rode the winner of the 1882 Grand Steeplechase de Paris.

He was born at Skerries House, Co Kildare, in October 1848 and died of cancer on August 7, 1905, aged 56. Tommy was buried at Great Connell, near Newbridge, Ireland.

He was the eldest of five talented sons of Joseph Beasley of Atley, Co Kildare.

Away from racing he was a crack shot and skilful angler.
