Albert Banner

1871 - 1918

The son of a coal miner, Albert Banner was born at Radford, Nottingham in 1871.

He was apprenticed to Joe Vasey at Woodborough near Nottingham.

He rode his first jump winner in 1895 and rode a total of 63 during his career.

The best horse he rode was Bloomer, on which he won the 1900 Grand Sefton, Champion Chase & Welsh Grand National.

He also won the Valentine Chase in 1899 on Whiteboy ll and had three rides in the Grand National.

In 1916, he enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment giving his age as 39 (he was, in fact, 45).

He then transferred to the 15th Battalion of the 110 Labour Corps as Private G/28017 Banner. 

Albert died in hospital whilst serving in France on 11 January 1918 and was buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery aged 46.
