February 21, 2017 - Meeting Summary


The San Diego S Gaugers held the February club meeting at our clubhouse (304 on the mall map) in Grossmont Center at 10:00am. Attendees were: Alex Sibbald, Ken Sadlock, Mike Forys, Mark Reinhard, Robert Graves, John Racey, Les Smith, Wes Noel, Dale Minard and Al Keil.


Introduction of new faces / Show and Tell:

Wes Noel brought in 2 new Lionel cylindrical hopper cars in S Gauge. He removed the scale wheel trucks and substituted American Model Trucks. Al Kiel donated a post card depicting a Santa Fe train at the San Diego Station.

Treasurer’s Report:

Bob Graves reported that we received $174.17 from visitor donations in February.

Standards Report:

Raulf Polichar brought in 3 completed turnouts and has one additional turnout still in process.

Publicity Report:

Les Smith reported that the contact and other relevant information he received from Dale Minard was complete and useful. Mike Forys reported that there is a Lego event scheduled for the April 22/23 weekend. The precise time is still to be determined.


Old Business:

PY3.5 (station expansion):

The module is ready for gluing down the track and the station platforms are in the works. (On hold)

T1 replacement frame:

The replacement frame is ready for track. (On hold)

PY1, PY2 and C4 expansion:

An additional straight section has been constructed, installed and is awaiting track.

New Gilbert Town Modules:

Two of the three new Gilbert Town modules have been installed on the main layout. The third module is ready for track and #6 left hand turnout for the outside main. The 4th Module is due for updating in March.


New Business:

Window Layout Success and Visitor Attendance:

As of 02/18/2017 the window layout button has been pushed 2,224 times since our last meeting, 48,891 times since we installed it at Grossmont Center and 83,864 times since day one. We should hit the 100,000 mark in July or August.

Future events:

The next meetings will be held on Tuesday March 21 and Tuesday April 18, 2017. All meetings will be held at our Suite (304 on the mall map) in Grossmont Center at 10AM.

Additional Window layout:

The third window display is complete and the Lego Museum has provided scenery and a train, which is operated with the window button along with the other window layouts.

New Clinics:

Mike Forys gave a clinic on the module wiring at the beginning of the club meeting. He will be giving another clinic on the club’s modular layout wiring in March.

Clubhouse Construction:

Mike Forys reported that the next step is to install lighting in the side area and then move our egg crate storage assemblies into that area.

Mall Security:

A discussion was held on how to handle disruptive visitors. Mike Forys talked to the head of mall security again; to work out appropriate actions that SDSG members can take. The phone number for mall security is 619-954-6201. Future incidents will be recorded and security will be notified.

Ceramic Village Alternative:

Mark Reinhart presented a drawing for a potential alternative to the Ceramic Village that could also be used at trade shows. It could run two trains with switching and provide capability for several Flyer accessories. A motion was entered to allocate up to $500 to accomplish this construction and the motion was passed.

Field Trip:

Les Smith proposed a field trip to Nethercutt Museum at Sylmar sometime in the future. It would require a train and metro trip. Les and Wes Noel will gather facts.
