August 2009 Open House

San Diego S-Gaugers hosted its first layout open house on Saturday, August 22, 2009, in Encinitas, California. The modular layout was open to anyone who wanted to come run his or her S gauge rolling stock. About a dozen new people showed up at the event and several brought engines or train sets to run. Not surprisingly, the mix was heavy on Flyer and Flyonel, but we also had some fine-scale modelers show up. This provided us an opportunity to refine our track work a bit. The club provided AC, DC and DCC power sources and all three got used at different times during the day.

Five of the club’s six “under construction” modules were also set up to let folks see where the layout is going, hopefully in time for the GTE show in December. Track laying on one of the yard modules provided an impromptu module-building workshop that attracted a lot of attention as well. The action accessory display, on the “Gilbert siding” was also popular.

The original eight modules were set up in the midle of Roland's workshop/garage with the club's new banner and welcoming table with literature provided by NASG and module tiles that explain the Krause corner concept.

The three new rail yard modules were out front where Mike demonstrated track laying.

A train rolls by the Gilbert Siding on the inner mainline.

The American Models Southern Crescent emerges from the tunnel on the outer mainline.

Gilbert's Royal Blue pulls a set of 66X aluminum streamliners on the inner mainline.

The Southern Crescent rolls past The Farm . . .

. . . and the dairy pasture and ice house . . .

. . . to approach the Orange Grove.
