This was held on June 27 where students spoke in the Sir Turi Carroll, Rāwhiti Ihaka, Korimako and Pei Te Hurinui Jones sections. Mareikura Kākā Year 10 represented Te Kareti o Ōtaki in the Sir Turi Carroll 9 (Junior English Contest) where her chosen topic was 'You don't just wake up with resilience". Tioreore Ngatai Melborne of Ngai Tuhoe and Ngati Porou iwi came to College as a guest speaker whom shared her whakaaro and personal experiences as a new actor and film producer . Tioreore has acted in The Retrurn of the Wilderpeople, Cousins , Whina and produced her first short story on film this year called "E Rangi Rā" that was written in Te Reo Maori. She spoke of her upbringing , attending Te Kohanga Reo , Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kawakawa mai Tawhiti and then Te Toi Whakaari in Auckland. She spoke of loneliness in her first and second years but how she continued to push through meeting and learning new people in her new acting pathway. She reiliterated that its important to stay grounded and not let yourself get too caught up in the hype of stardom.
On Thursday afternoon the akonga watched " Te Kingi Raiona" in Te Reo Maori and met the man who plays the voice over for Simba before the viewing of the film. An epic film written all in Te Reo Maori what a taonga ! Friday morning saw the akonga viewing "Waiora "- 8 short stories produced by young actors and future film makers.
The wānanga was held last Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Tainui marae. Rangatahi from Paraparaumu, Kapiti, Otaki and Wainuiomata Colleges reconnected and made more memories with each over over the two days. An early 5am Matariki ceremony and eating of the kumara didnot dampen the fact that Matariki was not visible .
