The EPro8 Challenge is an inter-school science and engineering competition. Every year over 25,000 students from throughout New Zealand take part. Students participate in a series of events: firstly within school where teams to represent Ōtaki College were selected, and then inter-school in semifinals, followed by the Wellington Regional Final. This year four teams from each semi final qualified for the final.
These events are designed to promote science, engineering and problem solving.
From our in school competition three Year 9 and 10 and three Year 7 and 8 teams were selected to represent Otaki College in their respective semifinal competitions.
The difficulty level of the EPro8 competition has increased significantly since its inception, with students expected to master much more challenging tasks, however, our students rose to the challenge.
While only one of our teams made it to the regional final the students from all of the teams displayed remarkable problem solving abilities, communicated well and persevered with the challenges they were given. Well done to all participants.
The final was held at Brandon Intermediate on the night of our senior prizegiving. Huge congratulations to Daisy (for ensuring that the team qualified, even though she could not attend the final) Zach, Lachlan, Bill and Giorgio (who stepped up for Daisy) for their very impressive performance in being regional runners up. (I believe it could have gone either way).
We eagerly await the opportunity to take first place in 2023.
