“Students learn best when they feel accepted, when they enjoy positive relationships with their fellow students and teachers, and when they are able to be active visible members of the learning community. Effective teachers foster positive relationships within environments that are caring, inclusive, non-discriminatory, and cohesive.” The New Zealand Curriculum, p. 34.
PB4L School-Wide is a long-term, whole-school approach to help schools develop their own social culture that supports learning and positive behaviour. The framework is evidence based. It provides us with a process for considering both learning and behaviour across the whole school, and student by student.
Ōtaki College has been part of the PB4L framework since the beginning of 2013. This journey has given us the opportunity to review and refine our ROAR school values and deliberately embed these into all that we do at the College. The students, parents, staff and BOT collectively decided that at Ōtaki College we value Respect (Whakaute), ŌC Pride (Rangatira te Tū), Active Learning (Ākonga Kamakama), and Responsibility (Kawenga). These values and the PB4L framework are a core part of our school’s strategic plan.
Our ROAR values system enhances our ability to create a positive environment where we acknowledge when students do the right thing. ROAR values focus both staff and student attention on the desired behaviours that are rooted in our agreed values. This means we place students in the best position to experience success in their learning and in their social relationships.
This week’s message focused on the ROAR value of WHAKAUTE / ŌC Respect. Students were reminded and encouraged to continue to be kind to one another and to always help our brothers and sisters who are in need.
