... for demonstrating ŌC RŌAR values when attending Puhoro at Ucol in Palmerston North earlier this month. Many members of the public commented on how smart they looked in their uniforms and complimented them on the way they mihi'd the presenters in te reo after their workshops (Without even being asked!)

Dear Parents/Caregivers,
In Social Sciences, ākonga (students) explore how societies work, and how they can participate and take action as critical, informed and responsible citizens. Social sciences, with its focus on people, places, history and economies, links in well with career education. By building career-related activities into the Social Sciences’ learning area, ākonga will develop the understandings, skills and attributes that they need to make positive career decisions throughout their lives.
The College provides ākonga with Careers education, information, advice and guidance. Our careers programme aims to support ākonga to develop their academic, social and employability skills needed for lifelong success in a diverse and changing world of work. Ākonga will take part in different activities and events to help them with this. Through impartial Careers guidance, we will encourage all ākonga to have high aspirations for their careers. More than this though, it speaks to our core RŌAR values.
One of the action goals of the Social Sciences’ Department is to continue to review career pathways for ākonga to ensure that we have a school wide focus to provide quality information to ākonga (and their parents/caregivers) on their learning and progress and future pathways.
We understand that it is important for ākonga to develop themselves through careers, employability and enterprise education. It is also vital that they learn about careers and the world of work, and develop their career management and employability skills. We want to support ākonga with making decisions about their progression pathways and to investigate different careers. As a part of the Year 10 Social Studies Programme, ākonga will complete a career’s unit called “Careers, Employability & Enterprise.” In this topic, we will use the online digital platform MyMahi to better discover, develop and manage their future pathways. We encourage students to have ongoing conversations with their whānau.
Your child will use The Real Game, a career education resource designed for junior students. It introduces the world of work and helps ākonga develop an understanding of the options and opportunities available to them and the implications and importance of their choices.
The Career Profile and The Real Game will help your child to understand the bigger picture of the working world and give them the chance to learn about things such as job satisfaction, budgeting and planning for the future.
We are very fortunate to have an excellent Careers and Gateway Department. Stephanie Putt and her team offer amazing services which we encourage ākonga and whānau to investigate further.
Any support or time that you can give will be greatly appreciated. For example, you could:
Provide a work experience opportunity for a day at your workplace for a Year 10 student during the school holidays or weekends.
Ask your child regularly about what they have been doing in The Real Game.
Help your child with any tasks they bring home.
Encourage your child to have a live CV which they can add/change.
Introduce your child to people whose occupations they express an interest in.
If there is anything you would like to discuss about The Real Game or ways you would like to participate, please feel free to contact your son’s Social Sciences teacher.

We are delighted to share that Ōtaki College are participating in the Ikura|Manaakitia te whare tangata, the period products in schools’ initiative.
Research shows that 77 per cent of students would rather fail a subject than have their peers know they have their period and approximately one in 12 reported having missed school due to lack of access to period products. This highlights the stigma surrounding periods which we hope to change. Through the initiative we will also help to:
Reduce barriers to access education
Reduce financial strain on families to provide products
Improve attendance
Increase participation in sporting and cultural activities
The Ministry of Education is providing period products (pads and tampons) to students to allow them to manage their monthly cycle. We have products available for students to pick up from the office and take home, as well as having dispenser units in our school bathrooms.
For more information on the initiative, please visit: Ministry of Education - Ikura initiative

We're looking for some support for our family of four living on a farm at Manakau. We have a one year old and a three year old, and we both work full time running our own businesses. We are looking for support with housework 2-3 hours per day, three-four days a week; and minding children when they are unable to go to preschool due to runny noses, or on weekends when my partner and I are both working, and other ad hoc times. Could be one role doing both the housework and childcare; also interested to hear from people interested in either/or.
