At this time of the year many senior students are either considering leaving school and what they are going to do next OR if they are returning to school, what subjects they are going to take next year. Parents/caregivers serve as a major influence in their children's career development and career decision making. Here are some useful resources from the CATE (Careers and Transition Education Association NZ Inc) website to help parents/caregivers to support their young people with their decisions: Parent Resources .
This resource provides information on GenZ, the changing world of work, NCEA, subject selection, understanding tertiary learning options, tips for parents on supporting their young person and resources they can access to work alongside their teen to map out their future plans.
Most Year 11 to 13 students have up to 5 weeks in term 4. For some, early release may be considered. Year 11 to 13 students can apply for early study leave IF they meet the following criteria.
These students must have achieved, or almost achieved, their respective NCEA qualifications. Including:
Having caregiver consent
Completed all their internal assessments and are on track for achieving well in their external exams. For this student study from home is their preference to do well, or
Completed all their internal assessments and are not sitting externals. For this student they wish to complete extra learning to gain their NCEA qualification and this can be done from home, or
Completed their NCEA qualification and are not sitting externals. For this student they want to use early exit to gain work experience
To be eligible for early study leave:
Caregivers must give their permission
All a student’s teachers MUST sign their approval to them leaving their lessons.
Students need to complete sign out procedures early with SMM and for Year 13 students, do their final signout.
UCOL have recently released their U-Skills courses for 2022 and Hamish Wood and Steph Putt have met with our senior students and gone over what's available. These courses have also been included in our Year 11-13 course selection booklet which will be available on the school website in Week 10.
The courses run either one or two days a week, while the student is still enrolled at school. They are either held at UCOL in PN or at Ōtaki College in the case of Level 2 and Level 3 construction, along with the new Defence Pathways course, which will run in 2022 for the first time. This course will help students prepare for a career in the Defence Force.
Applications for these courses need to be completed asap. Application forms are available from Steph Putt, and need to be returned to her along with a birth certificate or current passport. Students will be interviewed by a staff member from UCOL during Term 4. If you have any questions about these courses please either email Steph Putt: spt@otakicollege.school.nz or phone her on 3648204 extension 719.
If you would like a copy of your child's 2021 sports photo (s), please contact Kirsty Doyle at kdl@otakicollege.school.nz.

Income limit changes: financial support available to more New Zealanders
I wanted to let you know that the Government has agreed to temporarily increase income limits for hardship assistance, meaning more people may be eligible for hardship assistance from 1 November 2021 until 28 February 2022.
This increase means casual or part-time workers, or people who aren’t already getting financial support may be eligible for help with their immediate or emergency costs. (Note: Income thresholds for Emergency Housing Special Needs Grants, Transition to Work Grants and the Course Participation Allowance aren’t changing.)
From 1 November, people new to MSD can click on our check what you might get guide. They’ll be asked some easy questions about their costs, then we’ll let them know about Work and Income payments they may be able to get. They may wish to ask a friend or family member to help use the guide.
Alternatively, if they’d like to talk with MSD, they can call us:
0800 559 009 for working age
0800 552 002 for over-65’s
0800 88 99 00 for students
Interpreters are available if that suits them best.
There’s information about the new income limits on our website or on the government’s website.
