It has been a busy time in the Performing Arts department over the last few weeks. Term 1 ended with the annual Variety Concert on Thursday April 10th. The hall was full and our hosts were Olivia Fogden and Logan Boyer, who were very entertaining! The Senior Kapa Haka Group opened the evening with an awesome performance. It is wonderful to have Kapa Haka back in college and have them perform for us. We heard two original songs from our Smokefreerockquest bands: New Generation and The Funky Sevens. Our Year 9/10 Band class also played and for some of them it was their first time playing on stage in front of a live audience. They did a great job and no doubt we will see more of them in the future. The night ended with some Neon Poi and Fire Poi in the quad outside the hall. It is the final time we will see Logan Hughes, Pierre Lange-Gerrard, Taleah Falamoe and Isabel Hogan perform in the Variety Concert as they will be moving on to other adventures at the end of the year. Thanks to you all for sharing your talent with us!
At the beginning of Term 2 we were honored to have the U.S. Marine Corps Pacific Band from Hawaii play for us. They played some traditional American songs and also a couple of Katchafire songs which the students really enjoyed. They were highly entertaining and were greeted by a powhiri from the kapa Haka group. At the end of the concert the school responded with our college haka. After the concert for the college the senior Music students were treated to hearing the classical brass quintet play some marches and different types of music. The quintet were exceptional, made up of 2 Trumpets, a double French Horn, Trombone, and Tuba. One of the trumpet players also played a Flugelhorn and a Piccolo Trumpet. The students had lots of questions and really enjoyed being able to talk with the band in a more informal way.
