This year we were privileged to have Mr Ben Sigmund as our key-note speaker. Ben, a professional football player with the Wellington Phoenix for 8 years, played for New Zealand 35 times and was a member of the 2010 Fifa World Cup Side. Kiri Winiata-Enoka and Jessica McArley for their netball coaching and commitment. The following email was received by the Principal:
"Good morning Andy,
I’m just writing a quick note to commend two of your senior students that coached my granddaughter Summer for netball this last season.
Kiri and Jess were absolutely amazing, patient, supportive and dedicated. Not only did they train twice a week but at the end of the season they gave them a fun day in the school gym on the first day of the school holidays. All the kids came home with a team photo and a personal blurb on the back from each coach about how amazing they are, as well as a little goody bag.
These two lovely girls made the netball season really enjoyable and gave the kids an understanding and appreciation for the sport.
So well done to the school for having this initiative for the senior students to mentor the younger ones."
Full details can be found on the school website calendar.

She says: "I am currently undertaking a research project that is looking into parents’ perspectives on their children’s language learning in New Zealand. The target participants of this research are parents/caregivers who:
live in New Zealand right now
were born overseas/abroad
speak another language (or more) that is not English, Te Reo Māori, or New Zealand Sign Language, and
have one child or more who is at preschool or school. "
The survey should take approximately 10-13 minutes and it is completely anonymous. "

A group of Year 11 Ōtaki College students recently completed an Introduction to Trade course which they have participated in one day a week during terms 1 - 3, at UCOL in PN and Levin.
The course is designed to give students an introduction to some of the trades, so they can learn more about them and they can make informed choices about what careers they may like to follow in the future. The trades included automotive engineering, mechanical engineering and construction.
In addition to the five unit standards related to the trades, the students also completed a career unit standard called "Explore Career Options and their implications", throughout the year. Practical activities were also utilised throughout the course.
One student's feedback from this year's course: "Intro to trades was a fun experience that I highly recommend people should do. It has a nice variety of subjects and projects that makes each day there fun and exciting. It has also helped me think about what I want to do in the future and has provided me with the support I need".
Information about this course has been given to Year 10 students last week to take home. Applications are required in order to be considered for this course in 2021. A maximum of 12 students will be accepted. Please contact Steph Putt for further information: spt@otakicollege.school.nz.
Eva Hakaraia and Ella Kirby from Kāpiti Coast District Council have been actively leading a group of senior students from ŌC in Te Whare Hui and have been meeting every Friday this year to talk about matters that pertain to our youth e.g. the Elections, Climate Change, Black Lives Matter etc.
“Te Anamata is a youth-led community based initiative supported by the council. It aims to facilitate youth-led initiatives and projects, Te Anamata’s main role is to provide a space where young people can openly talk about issues that are relevant to them. Te Anamata can serve as a direct link to the Kāpiti Coast Youth Council and is for rangatahi to support rangatahi. We follow the guidelines of Ahau, Hapori, and the Ao - where we aspire to do what we can for ourselves, our community, and the world. Our approach embeds Te Ao Māori and tikanga as we weave our kaupapa into our projects with Ōtaki young people.
It seems that the ID required when students wish to sit their Learner Licence is a barrier to many. I therefore wanted to clarify this for students and whānau.
The identification required is as follows:
Option 1: Current NZ passport OR
Option 2: Original 1998+ NZ birth certificate plus a current photo ID in the same name as their birth certificate (this could be their school or UCOL ID) OR
Option 3: Original 1998+ NZ birth Certificate, DL26 form, plus proof of address (eg.bank statement, IRD letter).
Ōtaki College provides $50 towards the cost of any driving licences or defensive driving courses. Bank account details and evidence of their licence can be sent to Mrs Putt to activate this. Students are also able to gain NCEA credits for the licences that they achieve. Students can see Mrs Putt or Mr Wood about this.
