This year has been challenging for ODE3 to say the least, from their first trip for the year; Marlborough Sounds, this class has often been faced with challenging weather conditions.
However, optimism is a beautiful approach to anything in life, I believe those that are optimistic are often rewarded.
New experiences and contingency plans are the first things that come to mind when reflecting on the ODE3’s most recent Alpine trip.
Strong winds and challenging tramping and navigation conditions meant that the students had to rely on their pre planning and contingency plans. Having started with Plan A on the first day by the end of the third day we were at Plan G!
The end result; 2 days of tramping, a total of 11.5 km in distance covered along the Round the Mountain track and Whakapapaiti Track. One night spent in the Whakapapaiti Hut, one night in tents up Ruapehu and one night in the Manawatu Lodge with the ultimate reward; a bluebird day of skiing and Snowboarding on the last day of the trip. 7 out of the 8 students had never experienced skiing or snowboarding before, by the end of the day the ‘stoke’ meter was at an all time high!
Thank you to ODE3 for staying optimistic and thank you Tawhirimatea for allowing us to connect with Ruapehu.
