Recently, Īhaka Martyn came and performed He Māori to 100 students from year 9-13 Te Reo Māori, Wharekura, Drama, Music and Te Aō Haka classes. The students found the play funny, inspiring, surprising and relatable. The one-person show was about identity and having Māori and Pakeha ancestry. Performed impressively by Īhaka Martyn, it was a mix of stand-up comedy, drama, guitar, haka & waiata. This show was developed in collaboration with Taki Rua Productions who are a kaupapa Māori organisation based in Te Whanganui-a-tara. The students said they enjoyed the way the show was a blend of many things and very funny. Highlights for them included the comedic songs, the way one actor created many characters, the story about the first experience on the marae as well as the audience interaction.
Īhaka Martyn has a show The Aotearoans on June 5-8 at Circa as part of the Kia Mau festival ( https://kiamaufestival.org/events/the-aotearoans/ ) . We are hoping to have Taki Rua back to our kura in the future to share more performances.
