Fri 12 April, Last Day of Term
We will be hosting a workshop making biochar, and celebrating the change of seasons, on April 6th, 10am-2pm.
Biochar is a form of charcoal which is made in a low-oxygen kiln, and can be used to enrich soil and sequester carbon. It is also possible to cook a kai on a biochar kiln - a 'char-b-q' - which we will be doing on the day. John and Holly from Char Pae, a Paekakariki initiative, will join us for an introductory, practical workshop, walking us through each step - from choosing your kiln and materials, doing the burn (and the char-b-q), and ways to use your finished biochar.
Once the kiln is burning, there will be plenty of time to check out the rest of the Ahoaho space, with a working bee happening in the market garden, and the chance to harvest fruit in the orchard. We will then share kai from the 'char-b-q' together. At the end of the workshop, you will be able to take some biochar home to use in your own garden.
If you are interested in joining - or supporting - this event, please contact Rosa at Ahoahomarakai@gmail.com
Have you seen the new Careers Board in the library? This month's focus is on Computers & Technology. Each month or so, this will be updated with a new career pathway. If any of these career pathways spark interest for you, come and see Steph in the careers room to have a chat.

All Year 12 and 13 students will be involved in The BP Business Challenge from 13-15 March, in the school hall. Students will learn how to come up with an idea for a sustainable business which is financially viable, and explore and develop employability skills and an entrepreneurial mindset. The experience connects the students with their local business community.
During the experience students can develop the following skills:
Teamwork
Leadership
Presentation
Problem solving
Resilience
Communication
The programme is run by two facilitators who have practical business experience and a background in working with young people.
On the final day, the students present their business ideas, creations and discoveries to a panel of judges at a business expo. The judges, who are typically local business people, celebrities and MPs evaluate each team’s presentation and decide on a winning team.
Look out for the photos from this event in the next newsletter!

This is a reminder that students can utilise the Metlink public bus service. Students will need a snapper bus card to use this public transport.
Waitohu 290 Bus. This leaves college at 3:29pm and goes to Paraparaumu via the Waitohu Plateau.
Ōtaki 290 Bus. This leaves college at 4.03pm and goes through Central Ōtaki to the Beach.
As a school, our primary role is to maximise the time your students have in classes to help gain the best educational outcomes possible. To do this we encourage whanau to look at options that have been outlined above when cycling/walking is not a possibility.
Yet, we also know that there are special circumstances for each individual and whanau. There is an early bus for students who are travelling to Ōtaki Beach.
Ōtaki Beach 290 Bus. This is for students who live at the northern or southern end of Ōtaki Beach. If a student is not catching the bus to the beach, they are not eligible to leave school early. Please use alternative transport. On this bus, students are not to get off in central Ōtaki, unless for medical reasons.
Finally, students leaving school early (Ōtaki Beach 290 Bus) need to purchase a Student ID card (cost $7) from the school office. This card will say the early time an eligible student can leave their classes. Students will show their ID to their teacher before they are allowed to leave their class.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

We appreciate the students who are giving their time to being on a daily roster to support this initiative.
In January our 2023 Everiss Scholars, Hannah Thompson and Caleb Smith spent three exciting weeks in London and Scotland.
All six of our Ngā Ringa Whero attended the Hillary Outdoors Leadership Course in February.
In December 2023 two new members, Rex Kerr and John Barrett, were inducted into the College Hall of Fame. Frank Neil wrote about it in the Ōtaki Mail.
A group of Year 8 students are participating in an 8 week rangatahi hauora programme led by Anna Royal- a trained mental health clinician.
The students are exposed to educational and experiential elements of wellbeing. The weekly sessions introduce different elements of mental health in a fun and interactional way. We are grateful that Anna has offered this opportunity to our students.
This year's athletics day was held on Friday 1st March. The weather was stunning with blue skies and warm temperatures. This year in addition to our traditional athletic disciplines we offered alternative events during each rotation, this new initiative was well received by students and staff.
A huge thanks to Matua Sam and the Manakura Crew for their mahi delivering these events.
Our 2024 Athletics Champions and record holders will be announced at our next full school assembly. So watch this space ...
