Course selection for 2023 has begun, in earnest. The decision you and your student will make over the next few weeks is an important one. We encourage you to read the information below alongside the Course Selection Information which you and your student can access from the Ōtaki College website from Monday 19 September under the Students > Course Information tab. Why study a Social Science subject?
Classics, History, Geography and Social Studies offer your student comprehensive training in rigorous thinking, analysis, and the understanding of complex issues, as well as an invaluable education into the past, present and beyond. These subjects are intellectual disciplines which require the rigour of a scientist, the persistence of a detective and the imagination of a novelist. The study of Classics, History and Geography generates enthusiasm and commitment. What skills do Social Science students have?
The study of Classics, History, Geography and Social Studies involves in-depth analysis of particular events, people and places; past, present and future. This builds specific bodies of knowledge which may, in themselves, be necessary for a particular job, but studying Classics, History, Geography and Social Studies also develops more generic skills which are considered essential for maintaining employability in the job market both now and in the future. Employers often write these skills into job descriptions in terms of analytical ability, problem solving skills, decision-making ability, written and oral communication skills, reading comprehension, sound judgement, creativity and so on.
What jobs can you get with a Social Science background?
Those who study Classics, History, Geography and Social Studies know how to think. In an ever-shifting job market, the ability to think in abstract terms is not only one of the most desirable transferable skills, it is also one of the most reliable predictors of success on the job. A trained mind can be applied to any situation.
According to recent graduate destination surveys, Classics, History, Geography and Social Studies graduates were employed in a variety of jobs which included, but were not limited to, event coordinator, conference organiser, bank officer, international banking consultant, research assistant, library assistant, customer services executive, records manager, book buyer, community support worker, employment officer, student liaison officer, newspaper journalist, community support worker, lawyer, and primary and secondary school teachers.
Many students who study Classics, History, Geography and Social Studies work in radio, marketing, travel, museums, archaeology, and a range of Government Ministries, including Foreign Affairs and Trade, Health, Education and the Treasury.
