On Wednesday 28 August the Year 12 biology class went to Pukerua bay to collect data for an achievement standard on ecology. Prior to the trip we had heavy rain for the previous 4 days but even though it rained heavily the night before, the day was the only sunny day of the week and we travelled in the school van to meet up with Ben Knight, a marine biologist, who worked with one group while I worked with the other. Students were required to set out transect lines from the low tide mark to the high tide mark and then record what species were found in quadrats at set intervals. With all the required data collected students will collate this and prepare a report on the zonation of different species across the rocky shore platform
