I went on Outward Bound for an 8 day Mind, Body and Soul course, fully unaware that I was about to embark upon one of the most incredible experiences of my life.
When originally offered the opportunity, I declined with worries of my own health getting in the way. But after more thought I decided that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I should make the most of it. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
In the short time we were there, we were able to complete many different activities, the main ones were: a high ropes course, a two night tramp and a night on a sail boat. I'd like to write more about some of our other adventures but I'd rather keep this nice and short so I'll just talk about our time on the cutter and my favorite moments.
Sailing on the cutter was probably my favourite part of the whole journey. Probably because it was the most easy going and exciting part, especially when we all thought the cutter was going to capsize. By this point we were all able to chat with each other without awkwardness which really showed how much we'd connected as a watch. Another highlight was some of the conversations we had, they lead to long term nicknames and jokes which I thought was amazing!
My second favourite part was our first day transitioning from land to sea, we pulled into Torea Bay. We were able to rinse off in the sea after 12kms of tramping in the bush, it was refreshing and felt like luxury. This is where I really REALLY started to appreciate the little things that I'd always taken for granted.
And my third favourite part of the journey was on our second night at Anakiwa, we got to swim in bioluminescence!
I learnt so much on Outward Bound about myself, other people and the world around me. It is one of the best things that I've ever done. I left the course with new friends, new memories and a new outlook on life. I feel very privileged to have had this experience and am extremely grateful for the scholarship and people who made it possible. I would highly recommend that if you're able to, take this opportunity. It's well worth it!
