A group of senior students recently visited the accounting software company Xero in Wellington, as a result of an invitation issued to the school by ex student Jordyn Thompson. Jordyn works at Xero as a Graduate Engineer and thought that a visit to Xero would be a great opportunity for students looking to get into tech, law, finance, marketing, HR etc.
It was an enjoyable day and gave students the opportunity to see different jobs and career options that they didn't know existed, plus an insight into what working in a large company like Xero would be like. The table tennis and pool tables and free coffee were very appealing!
Here is feedback from two of the students:
"The visit to Xero showed me how a big tech firm like them is so down to earth. Being there I was shown what the company was all about, the amazing work culture and their values which they hold and pursue. The trip ultimately displayed to me how different fields of study could lead to the various work roles of the company. The trip even spiked my interest in the idea of maybe even working at Xero one day." Jayden.
"I thought that Xero is a nice company that is making profit while also helping the country's economy. It is very inclusive of all its employees and doesn’t discriminate just because someone may not be as smart as another, it makes everyone's opinion matter and doesn’t blame anyone specifically if it fails. Its offices feel very warm and comfortable making it easier for people to just sit down and get to work without the normal cubicle setting. I like how they gave their employees the ability to change positions with ease and made sure to give them the ability to learn everything that they needed for that new position." Aaron.
