A number of changes to NCEA are due to start at the beginning of 2024. Many of them affect not just Level 1 NCEA but also Levels 2 and 3.
Many Year 10 students have already sat their literacy and numeracy assessments, with results due 14 August 2023. There will be a second chance to do these assessments in week 4 term 4. (30 Oct - 3 Nov)
January 2024 sees the beginning of some major changes to NCEA that will be occurring over the next few years. Below is a summary of NCEA changes
The information below has been obtained from the website: https://ncea.education.govt.nz/understanding-how-ncea-requirements-are-changing
Important information:
2024 will see the full implementation of the ‘new’ NCEA Level 1 achievement standards across all subjects.
Students will need 60 credits for each NCEA Level.
Alongside this, students will need to obtain 10 credits literacy or te reo matatini and 10 credits numeracy or pāngarau. Students only need to achieve literacy and numeracy once.
Some differences:
The old NCEA needed 80 credits at level 1, 2 and 3 (including 20 credits from the level below). From 2024 onwards this will not be the case.
The old literacy and numeracy credits were part of the 80 credits; from 2024, they will be separate.
From 2024, literacy or te reo matatini and numeracy credits or pāngarau can not be used towards the 60 credits for NCEA levels 1, 2 or 3.
From 2024 students will need to gain these 20 credits from literacy or te reo matatini and numeracy or pāngarau or from the list of literacy/numeracy rich standards
What is the same?
Both Unit and Achievement standards can be used towards the 60 credits at each level.
Any credits previously gained can be used towards NCEA.
There is no time limit for gaining NCEA at any level.
Course and certificate endorsement criteria remain the same.
Please contact either Dawn Hirschberg (Principal’s nominee) or Hamish Wood (Deputy Principal), if you have any questions about this or NCEA in general.
