Term 3 is traditionally the most hectic time of year and, given our recent COVID-19 experiences, it now seems even more hectic in terms of the many things that are happening, particularly for senior students. I would encourage whānau/parents to be looking closely at the timelines that are now being put out as information for you all as these outline key dates around such things as halls of residence applications, scholarships, exam timetables, opportunities for Heads of School and the Sander Scholar.
At the time of writing the careers evening is about to take place and I am hoping that students and whānau will have taken the opportunity to come along to that evening. It is really important that we understand, with world travel no longer available, that our young people, particularly those due to leave school, develop a plan around what they are going to do. To this end, please be aware that the College staff are here to help and we will do our best to support students and whānau around any enquiries to support future pathways.
Not so long ago we would never have thought that we would be able to congregate on mass at the College to enjoy our traditional Variety Concert.
It was really exciting to be part of a large audience to view and enjoy the talents of our Ōtaki College students. I sincerely want to thank the Performing Arts department for the organisation behind this event and especially want to thank the students that participated in dance, drama and musical items. It was a brilliant evening and I loved every minute of it.
The ball season is now moving into full swing and our College Heads of School will be representing Ōtaki College at a number of these events. The Ōtaki College Ball takes place on Saturday 15th August with a lot of work going on behind the scenes by the College Ball Committee led by Anne Hagan. I am certain that this will be another fantastic event and I know all those taking part will have a great time.
I would encourage all parents to take some time to talk to their young ones about their expectations if they are attending after ball parties. Please make certain that plans are in place for sober drivers and that if you are hosting an event that this is done so in a responsible manner with police being notified of the event.
Another exciting time in Term 3 is the hosting of students from contributing schools who are considering attending Ōtaki College. We have again got high numbers of students coming into Years 7, 8 and 9. It is my hope that with these growing numbers we can again employ more staff at this end of the school to reduce class numbers and enhance our teaching and learning environment. New enrolments can be dropped off at the Ōtaki College office or given to the office of the contributing school to pass onto us. We are looking forward to an exciting cohort of new students coming into the College.
I would encourage new parents and students to take up the opportunity of attending our Open Evening on Thur 13 August at 6.30pm. I look forward to meeting you there.
