On Monday 24th November Year 10 students took part in a Rural Health Careers Programme where they were able to explore different health careers and connect with tertiary students who were currently studying in different health disciplines across Aotearoa. These included: Medicine, Optometry, Oral Health, Psychology and Nursing.
Each student gave an overview of the area in which they were studying including; different study providers, what the study would look like, number of years involved, reasons to study it and related specialities or career options. They also mentioned other possible health careers eg. Midwifery, Audiology, Paramedic, Radiation Therapy, Pharmacy and Dietetics.
After the PowerPoint presentation students were able to rotate around five different interactive activities which included: reflex testing, blood pressure checks, eye tests, making moulds of their teeth and an activity related to psychology.
This was an awesome experience for our Year 10 students and we are very grateful to the tertiary students who volunteered to share their knowledge and experiences with us.
