I was very fortunate to be able to attend an Outward Bound course which ran from the 3rd of February through to the 23rd February. The courses run out of the Outward Bound Centre in Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds.
I was supported to attend through a scholarship from Work Ready Kāpiti. I would like to give a huge thanks to them and to the teachers who nominated me.
I was placed into a “Watch Group'' with a number of young people so the first challenge was to build relationships with other young people from all over New Zealand.
The highlight of my time at Outward Bound was the four day sailing module. I really enjoyed this because I got to learn new things about my watch mates while I was out on the cutter, which is a type of sailboat. I learnt how to sail and how to undertake a number of different roles on the boat.
One of my biggest challenges was my 3 day solo. I was dropped off in an isolated area by myself where I had to set up camp and survive on my own. I proudly overcome this challenge by reflecting on my surroundings and what I was grateful for. I learned that it's okay to be alone. Usually I don't like being alone, that's why this was a challenge.
This experience means a lot to me. If I could do it again I would! This will help me in the near future because it gives me a clear understanding that all things are possible and you can overcome them. I have developed leadership skills and this life experience will certainly help me in my future.
Thanks
Brian Harvey
