Kia ora Parents and Whānau,
As part of our ongoing efforts to improve student behaviour and accountability at Ōtaki College, we want to share some important updates and concerns regarding our card system.
Positive Impact of the Card System
We are pleased to report that the card system has had a positive impact on many of our students, promoting better behaviour and accountability. However, we have identified a few areas where improvements are needed to ensure the system's effectiveness for all students.
Changes to the Card System
Starting immediately, we will be removing the requirement for parent signatures at the bottom of the cards. This decision was made because the cards are not taken home, rendering the signature requirement unnecessary.
Addressing Non-Compliance and Absenteeism
We are aware that the card system is not working for some students, particularly those with prolonged absenteeism or those whose parents/whānau do not agree to them completing a callback after kura. As a kaihautū team, we believe this undermines the integrity of our efforts. To address this, we are implementing the following measures:
Alternative Callbacks: If whānau are unwilling to support after kura callbacks, we will offer lunchtime callbacks as an alternative. However, we expect all students to follow our procedures and exhibit expected behaviours, including attending callbacks when warranted.
Consequences for Non-Compliance: Continuous disobedience, including non-attendance of callbacks, may result in an internal stand-down or withdrawal from classes. We are currently discussing the logistics of this consequence, such as working in referral rooms, to avoid disrupting the admin block or student centre.
EOTC Register Updates
We will update the EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) register to ensure all staff are aware of students who are not permitted to go on trips due to behaviour concerns.
Setting Standards for Language and Behavior
We have also noted concerns about the tone and language used by some students. Swearing and inappropriate language are unacceptable, and we are committed to setting a higher standard. Staff will be reinforcing these expectations consistently.
Our Commitment
We are dedicated to creating a positive and respectful learning environment for all students. We appreciate your support in reinforcing these standards at home and in the community. Together, we can ensure that all students meet the high expectations we set for their behaviour and academic performance.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this further.
Ngā mihi nui,
Matua Jarrad Porima
