Chris King, veteran of the Russian Convoys, laid a wreath and spoke on behalf of the members of the Russian Convoy Club at the 2020 SS Otaki Commemoration.
His words, written to the Principal on the following day, sum up the spirit of this year's Commemoration ...
"I would like to place on record my gratitude for what was for me, and my Convoy veterans, a memorable occasion on 9th March this year, especially with the emphasis placed on the Russian Convoy Campaign 1941-45.
Because the memories of those campaign years are always with me it was particularly pleasing that your College students and staff could share in the history of what became a wartime victory. I am conscious of a quotation offered on behalf of the men, including my former shipmates, who died in that campaign -
"When you return/Tell them of us/That we died/That they might live."
I hope in some small way I was able to convey this message on Monday.
Finally, I so admire the friendliness and the bi-lingual aspect of Otaki College, its students and staff."
Sincerely, Chris King.
