The lowest level of the pyramid is made up of the most basic needs, (physiological needs: food, water, sleep, and warmth) while the most complex needs are at the top.
In the last newsletter we began exploring one of these physiological needs by looking at the importance of sleep.
This week we’ll talk briefly about water.
Next week we’ll look at nutrition and the relationship between what we eat and how different foods make us feel.
So ...what’s the big deal about water?
Our bodies are about 60% water
Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to work properly. For example, water:
Energises muscles
Keeps your skin looking good
Helps with brain function
Gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration and bowel movements
Keeps your temperature normal
Lubricates and cushions joints
Protects sensitive tissues
So please encourage your rangatahi to bring their water bottles to school and fill them up at the gym or the canteen where there is beautiful filtered water available.
Remind them that the aim is to try and drink 2-3 litres of water per day...not that easy.
Happy Drinking and Happy Easter!
