Over the course of Weeks 6 and 7, the Year 7 & 8 classes, along with some Year 9 and 10 students were involved in the ePro8 School Week. The EPro8 Challenge is an inter-school science and engineering competition. Every year over 22,000 students from throughout New Zealand take part. Students participate in a series of events: firstly within their school and then inter-school. These events are designed to promote science and engineering. Each day, a class was given the opportunity to experience using the ePro8 equipment, followed by completing a series of challenges. A team was selected from each class to progress to our school finals day. On our finals day, seven teams competed for three spots in the inter school challenge to be held in November. Teams were able to choose from a range of engineering challenges, including making a decision maker, building a scarecrow or a replica concrete truck (built to scale). Providing all students with the opportunity to participate, it meant that they were able to demonstrate our R.O.A.R values in a range of ways, through team work and getting involved to persevering and not giving up, even when things were hard. It was impressive to see how our students rose to the challenge and really pushed themselves to give something new a go. We hope to make this an annual event and an ongoing part of our programme within Years 7 & 8, as well as also providing students with the opportunity to have another go in Years 9 and 10.
Congratulations go to our three top teams, who now progress to the interschool event:
Beans (7 & 8 MNL) - Ameia Williams, Charlie Maidment, Meme Fulford and Libby Crewther
The Grems (7 & 8 AJF) - Fergus Humphries, Jamieson Hyde, Te Awa Mouton and Peniti Pumipi
Ōtaki Warriors (7 & 8 SWL) - Jacob Grindrod, Logan Hawea, Noah Carpenter and Ronan Cornelius
A huge congratulations also goes to the students from the remaining four teams who took part on our final. The points were incredibly close and it was a hard fought race for the finish line! Kia kaha.
