Kia ora,
As part of my chaplaincy placement at Ōtaki College, I have offered to run a programme called Shinegirl. It is a programme which builds value, strength, worth and purpose in young girls.
I have participated in running it at Nayland College in Nelson several years ago when it first started and found it to be of great value to the students who gave very positive feedback.
It is an 8-9 week course run with 10 girls and 2 or 3 young women as leaders .
We need your help to sponsor 10 girls who have been chosen to participate in Term 2. If you love the idea of seeing young women growing confidence and self esteem, then you or your business might like to consider sponsoring 1 student to attend. The cost is $70 per student and will help to equip these young women through their teens and on to their dreams.
If you would like to read the session outcomes and discuss this further, please contact me on andreabiggelaar@gmail.com
This course will start in Term 2.
Sponsorship payments can be made to Ōtaki College's bank account with Shinegirl as the reference. Thank you in advance. We would love to share feedback with you at the completion of the course and give you a personal thank you, so if you don't mind giving us your name and email or business name, that would be awesome. However anonymous donations will be accepted also. Thank you again, we are grateful for your support.
Kind regards,
Andrea Wheatley

In case you missed it, the Government has recently confirmed its final NCEA change package. Schools have been advised that the changes are intended to: strengthen our national qualification; address over-assessment and fragmented learning; promote culturally responsive teaching and learning; and improve accessibility, the support available to teachers, and the information available to students and whānau.
A copy of the Ministry of Education’s announcement is available here: Ministry website.
There are changes to the subjects that the Ministry proposes to support at NCEA Level 1. This is consistent with the policy objective - for NCEA Level 1 to become a broader, foundational qualification that allows students to keep their pathway options open, while Levels 2 and 3 promote greater specialisation.
The Ministry has asked me to encourage you all to give feedback. Public engagement on the subject list for NCEA Level 1 has commenced for a period of two months (closing on 20 April 2020).
More information is available on the Ministry’s website along with the provisional subject list for NCEA Level 1: https://consultation.education.govt.nz/ncea/ras-provisional-subject-list. The Cabinet paper and Ministry advice have also been made public (see under the February tab). You can find the list in the engagement questionnaire, or for your ease of reference it is also accessible from this link to the Cabinet paper (go to pages 19 and 20).
On Friday March 13 Ōtaki College, along with all other colleges on the Kāpiti Coast and Horowhenua, held a Lifting the Lid on Youth Suicide fundraiser sausage sizzle.
Over the past 15 months local Rotary Clubs have been working alongside secondary schools to increase Counselling resource to young people experiencing mental health issues through a range of fundraising events.
It was great to see the interaction between Rotary members and our students on Friday as we worked together to support this venture.
Ōtaki College is very appreciative of the time and energy Rotarians have given to this cause.
Our Heads of School had a great day onboard the Spirit of Adventure on 29 Feb, sailing on Wellington harbour. According to Head Girl, Kahe Nakhla, "Spirit of Adventure was such an exciting experience, we got to learn about sailing and work more as a team".

Congratulations to Cadence McHugo, tube rescue and Damien Doyle, Surf Teams who both won bronze medals at New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Championships in Gisborne. Ōtaki SLSC took 11 athletes to this event winning 10 National medals. Ōtaki College continues to have a large number of students involved in both nippers and lifeguarding. Thank you to Napier McFedries and Neale Ames who have spent the last 10 months coaching our athletes.
A large group of students attended waka ama regionals last weekend. These students have been training hard over the past 6 weeks in the gym and on the water. Unfortunately, NZSS Waka Ama has been cancelled this year so our team won’t be able to attend. Thank you to our coaches Ngawira Logan, Fern Thompson, Barb Rudd and manager Kelly-Anne Ngatai for all the hard work put into our team.
